FM: Egypt rejects dividing Iraq

"Egypt rejects the US Senate decision to divide Iraq,"said Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit replying to queries by diplomatic reporters Monday 1/10/2007.

Abul-Gheit said that Egypt absolutely rejects such proposal, asserting that the unity of Iraq should be maintained.

As for statements by the British Secretary of State on supporting South Africa's request to have a UN Security Council seat for Africa, he said that the British side denied such statements, pointing out that it was misinterpreted.

As for his talks recently in Cairo with a delegation of Iranian officials Abul-Gheit said that Egyptian-Iranian consultations are going on and will continue in the near future in an attempt to reach reconciliation.

Asked about the outcome of the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] on Egypt's proposal to make the Middle East an area free of weapons of mass destruction, he said, it is a strong victory to Egypt in the face of lack of responsibility on the part of the European Union in this respect.
