An Egyptian initiative to bring Darfur armed factions together

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said Cairo is keen on contacting all Sudanese political factions in a bid to consolidate Sudan's unity.

In press statements after meeting with Sudan's National Democratic Alliance leader Mohammed Othman Al-Merghani, Abul-Gheit said that his talks with the Sudanese opposition leader dealt with the current situation in Sudan and efforts made to settle the Darfur crisis.

Al-Merghani said Egypt floated an initiative to all armed factions in Darfur to meet in Cairo.

He added the meeting aims at convincing these factions to join Abuja Peace Pact.

On the other hand, Advisor to the Sudanese President Moustafa Othman Ismail said on 12/5/2007 that Darfur crisis is invested by a foreign power to practice pressure on Khartoum government in a bid to normalize relations with Israel, adding the Western media pictured Darfur problem as the biggest human tragedy threatening world peace.
