Abul-Gheit sends messages to UN, AU, EU, 5 permanent member-states on Egypt's vision on Darfur crisis

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Wednesday 9/5/2007 forwarded verbal messages to the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and the foreign ministers of the five permanent member-states of the UN Security Council.

The messages touched on Egypt's vision on how to settle the crisis of the western Sudanese region of Darfur.

They included proposals on reviving the political process in Darfur under the auspices of the UN and AU in a bid to encourage the Abuja peace agreement holdouts to join it so as to pave the way for the restoration of peace in Darfur.

Abul-Gheit said on Wednesday that opening a new Egyptian office in Darfur aims at raising Egyptian diplomats' visits to the region. "It is neither a diplomatic office nor a new consulate," he added.
