Abul-Gheit calls on all parties to join Abuja agreement

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit arrived in the Libyan city of Sirte on Saturday 28/4/2007 on a few hours' visit to Libya during which he was received by Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi.

The conference opened in Sirte earlier in the day.

In statements before leaving Cairo for Sirte, he said efforts should concentrate on political settlements and all holdouts of the Abuja peace agreement should join the arrangement.

He stressed the importance of implementing what has been agreed upon as regards the UN heavy support package for the African Union (AU) mission in Darfur.

He also underlined the necessity of pursuing dialogue between the UN and the Sudanese government to boost efforts to keep peace in Darfur region.

Abul-Gheit said he will convey a message from President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to leader of the Libyan Revolution Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

In press statements upon arrival in Sirte, Abul-Gheit said the message is part of full Egyptian-Libyan coordination to find a solution for the Darfur crisis.

He added we work together in this respect.

Abul-Gheit met with UN Special Envoy to Darfur, Jan Eliass on the fringe of the international conference on Darfur.

They discussed the latest developments of the Western Sudanese region of Darfur.

Abul-Gheit visited together with the other participants in the conference the project of the great man-made river reservoir in Sirte.

He expressed admiration for the project which turns desert into greenland.
