Abul-Gheit: Israel must accept Arab peace initiatives basis for negotiations

"Egypt has called on Israel to positively respond to the Arab peace initiative re-launched at the Arab summit in Riyadh," said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit in statements during a meeting with Saeb Erekat, Palestine Liberation Organization chief negotiator and member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Abul-Gheit said the Israelis should accept the initiative as groundwork for peace in the region.

Abul-Gheit said his talks with Erekat dwelt on the coming meeting of the Arab peace initiative committee due on April 18.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alla el-Hadidi said Abul-Gheit has reiterated to Erekat Egypt's commitment to backing the Palestinian cause.

Meanwhile, Egypt called for dealing with nuclear programmes of Israel and Iran on equal footing. Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit called during a meeting with Japanese ambassador in Vienna Yukiya Amano, currently on a visit to Egypt, for ending the double standard policies in dealing with the nuclear files of the two countries.

During the meeting, Abul Gheit affirmed Egypt would exert utmost efforts to render works of the preparatory commission a success.

Abul Gheit voiced concern over the failure to implement the resolution on rendering the Middle East an area clear of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), issued in 1995 and in 2000.
