Foreign Minister criticizes West's voting against denunciation of linking Islam with terror

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit Saturday 31/03/2007 criticized the voting of some Western countries against a draft resolution denouncing attempts to link Islam with terror, violence and human rights violation and calling on all states to confront the phenomenon of disrespect of religions and their symbols.

However, Abul-Gheit welcomed the sanctioning of the resolution by the UN Human Rights Council.

He considered the stance of those states as contradictory to keenness on protecting human rights in terms of protecting beliefs of man as a basic human right.

He pointed to anti-religion practices recently, asserting the dire need for the intervention of the international community to confront these phenomena.

All European member states plus Canada voted against the draft resolution submitted by the Islamic Group in Geneva.
