Egypt reiterated calls for better cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) regarding peacekeeping activities.
During a session on relations between the UN Security Council (UNSC) and regional organizations, Egypt's representative at the UN Maged Abdel-Fatah presented a three-level proposal on cooperation between UN and AU.
The first level focuses on intensifying contacts and coordination between the UNSC and the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC).
The second level is between the bodies concerned in the UN Secretariat and its counterparts at the AU Commission.
The third level is cooperation between the Peace Committee and the PSC in accordance with the provisions of article eight of the UN Chart designed to achieve the goals of the PSC.
Abdel-Fatah urged the UNSC to send a clear-cut message showing desire to cooperate with regional organizations to settle conflicts and achieve peace worldwide.
He concluded that Egypt, a member at the PSC, is ready to exert concerted efforts to enhance coordination and consultation between the UNSC and PSC.
