Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit Thursday called on the UNESCO Executive Council to issue a clear decision on the dispatch of a neutral international committee to supervise the restoration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and draw up a firm mechanism that prevents any future violations of the holy city's human heritage.
Abul-Gheit welcomed the UNESCO fact-finding committee report issued on Wednesday on the Israeli digging at Al-Aqsa Mosque, saying it was the first step toward halting the Israeli assaults on Islamic heritage in Al-Aqsa.
Abul-Gheit said it is high time the international community stood firmly against Israel's violations of Islamic sanctities in Al-Quds which are definitely a flagrant violation of international commitments that are based on international accords.
The UNESCO report called on the Israeli government to promptly halt digging and to coordinate with the Islamic Awkaf before carrying out any measures in East Jerusalem.
