Abul-Gheit: Egypt got back its land and retaliated for 1967 POWs

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said Egypt will follow up the file of 1967 prisoners adding the ministry of foreign affairs is keen to collect any available information in this regard.

The Foreign Minister said retaliation for the 1967 martyrs and the liberation of land was achieved in the 1973 war.

Answering a question on the reasons behind raising this issue at the present time, the Foreign Minister said it might be motivated by domestic positions.

Egypt will continue to seek more detailed information regarding the Egyptian POWs and will not easily relinquish doubts about their fate, the Egyptian Foreign Minister said.

The issue will not be closed before receiving the outcome of the Israeli investigations into the incident which had been revealed in 1995, Abul-Gheit added.

He said a complete text of the documentary showing the killing of the Egyptian POWs was sent by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to all competent authorities, including the two houses of parliament.

Abul-Gheit said that the killing of the 1967 martyrs had been avenged in the 6th of October war in 1973.

Abul-Gheit said the last part of the text of the documentary said the Egyptian soldiers had been alternately taking shelter and opening fire.

This meant that both parties were in a state of war, the Foreign Minister said.

Asked whether Israel had doctored the documentary before handing it to Egyptian authorities, Abul-Gheit unveiled that his ministry received it from two sources one of them was an Egyptian source that was able to download the film while it was being broadcast.

At the meantime, Assembly Speaker Dr. Ahmed Fathi Sorour considered statements by the Foreign Minister as not enough asking him to stand before the joint committee of the Arab Affairs, Foreign Relations and Human Rights to explain the official Egyptian situation towards the case.

Dr. Sorour said the killing of POWs is a first class legal lawsuit that requires collection of evidences confirming Israel's condemnation. He stressed the importance of considering the legal aspects of the lawsuit adding that peace is not just an agreement among governments and there will be no peace without reconciliation and mutual respect among peoples.

On his part, Dr Mofid Shehab the Minister of Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Councils said the government joins the people in condemning this horrible crime. He said reports quoting the foreign minister as saying that airing the film does not justify cutting off relations with Israel can not be built on before the Foreign Minister clarifies the fact of these statements.
