Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Thursday held a session of talks with head of Hamas politburo Khaled Meshaal, currently visiting Cairo.
Egypt will always support the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, one of which is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the lands occupied in 1967, Abul-Gheit assured Meshaal during a meeting Thursday.
He stressed the importance of having a political ground that could allow the coming national unity government to deal positively with the world community, now that the chance for resuming the peace process is there.
The Egyptian top diplomat also warned against infighting, saying it harmed the Palestinian cause. He called on Hamas and Fatah leaders to exert all possible efforts to commit to the Makkah agreement. Abul-Gheit added that engagement in politics should be flexible in full to score targeted aims.
Meshaal, speaking to reporters following the talks, termed his talks with Abul-Gheit as "frank and transparent," and dealt with post-Makkah Declaration situation and Egypt's leading role in reaching this accord.
The Palestinian side is very keen on maintaining coordination with Egypt, he pointed out. Meshaal praised Egypt's role in concluding the Makkah agreement and ending the siege clamped on the Palestinian people.
