Egypt welcomes results of Peace building Fund review

Egypt on Friday 20/11/2009 welcomed the results of the review process of the Peacekeeping Fund and pledges to augment its budget.

"Egypt welcomes the results of the review process of the Peace building Fund, and the pledges made by the donor community amounting to $312.9 million, thus increasing the Fund's budget, allowing it to expand its operations to reach 52 projects in 12 countries, which reflects the commitment of member-states to continue supporting the fund to achieve its objectives," Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN Maged Abdel-Fattah said in a statement.

The Egyptian delegate underlined the need to clarify the vision on the relationship between the Peace building Commission and Peace building Fund.

"Despite the independence of the Fund, under the authority of the Secretary-General, further improvements are required as regards the coordination and coherence between its activities and the funding programs for the projects being implemented in the countries on the agenda of the Peace building Commission, as well as the role of the Commission in providing guidance for policies of the Fund, which are to be implemented under the supervision of the administrative agent."

The delegate said that Egypt is looking forward to the start of the review process of the Peace building Commission in 2010.

He said Egypt trusts this process "will be completed effectively and in full cooperation with all member-states".
